چکیده

Embryos of the mummichog (Fundulus heteroclrtus) were exposed to 2, 5 , or 10 pg/L methylmercury (meHg) throughout development; these are concentrations below those which cause teratological effects in this species. After hatching, larvae were maintained in clean seawater and tested for prey-capture ability, using Artemia salina nauplii. Larvae that had been exposed to 10 pg/L methylmercury (and in two out of three trials, 5 pg/L) initially exhibited slower prey-capture ability than did the other groups. This is an indication of a subtle functional impairment due to the toxicant (“behavioral teratology”). However, the effect was transitory, and by about l week after hatching the prey capture of these larvae equalled that of the controls and the other treated groups. Growth of these larvae was also comparable to that of controls. The exposure may have caused retardation of neurological development, which was subsequently compensated for, and therefore no long-lasting effects were produced. In the field, however, embryos exposed to toxicants would probably continue to be exposed as larvae, and might not have the opportunity to recover from the deleterious effects, but rather might have them augmented. Effects of mercury on embryonic development and larval growth of the sea urchin Echinometra mathaei from the Persian Gulf

This study investigated the effects of increasing mercury (Hg) concentration on early developmental stages of sea urchin, Echinomethra mathaei, as a bioindicator. The toxicity test was carried out after the gamete released induction and fertilization in six concentrations of mercury within the range of 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 and 128 µg/L. Embryos samples were incubated for 30 h in control and test so...

Reproductive and transgenerational effects of methylmercury or Aroclor 1268 on Fundulus heteroclitus.

This research determined the potential for methylmercury or Aroclor 1268 to disrupt reproduction and sexual differentiation in Fundulus heteroclitus. The research determined whether fish that are exposed to mercury or Aroclor 1268 survive and successfully reproduce; whether offspring of exposed fish hatch, survive, produce eggs, and fertilize them; and whether the second-generation offspring of...

Influences of prey- and predator-dependent processes on cadmium and methylmercury trophic transfer to mummichogs (Fundulus heteroclitus)

Factors affecting CH3Hg and Cd trophic transfer from six invertebrates and a juvenile fish prey to mummichogs (Fundulus heteroclitus) were investigated using prey-dependent and predator-dependent approaches. Prey-specific trophic availability of metals to mummichogs was estimated using a subcellular partitioning approach (i.e., trophically available metals (TAM), as originally proposed by Walla...

The effects of increased snail (Nassarius obsoletus) density on the diet of the salt marsh mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus)

Human activities have dramatically altered the global nitrogen cycle approximately doubling the rate of nitrogen input into the biosphere. Linda Deegan and her team are in the midst of conducting a long-term fertilization experiment at the Plum Island Sound estuary in order to understand how ecosystem function changes when excess nutrients (70-100 uM NO3 and 5-7 uM PO4 3) are added. They have f...
